Outgoing Ashkelon Mayor Roni Mahatzni complained Saturday night that Defense Minister Ehud Barak has a double standard when it comes to government crackdowns.
Mahatzni charged that Barak has not acted with the same determination against Gaza terrorists who launch rocket attacks on the south of Israel as he did last week against Jewish residents and activists in the Hevron Peace House.
Gaza terrorists resumed their attacks on the western Negev just as children were setting out for school and their parents were leaving for work, at approximately 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
Two Kassam rockets and several mortar shells were fired at the Eshkol Regional Council District, a rural area primarily filled with farmland and open fields. No one was injured and no damage was reported in the attack.
On Saturday night, a Grad-type Katyusha rocket slammed into Ashkelon's industrial zone, where a number of strategic installations are located, including a large power plant and oil and gas pipelines.
The outgoing mayor said flatly that the June 19 temporary truce with the Hamas terrorist organization that controls Gaza is dead, and demanded that the government put a stop to the rocket fire.
More than 20 rockets and mortar shells were fired at southern Israel over the Sabbath.
