The government is debating whether to give consumers a break this week on the price of common bread. The price of electricity was lowered today.
The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor was expected to discuss a proposal to cut the cost of subsidized bread, known as "common bread" by as much as 10 percent in the coming days. Officials are expected to announce their decision sometime this week.
The bakers' union, however, threatened Sunday morning in response to the news that it would sue the government for millions of shekels if it goes ahead with such a plan.
The price reduction would be carried out due to a corresponding drop in the cost of wheat on the world market. The price of subsidized bread was raised repeatedly in the past year due to successive rises in the cost of wheat on the international market.
Consumers can also expect a slightly lower electricity bill next bill as well, due to a drop in the price of crude oil and gasoline.
The cost of electricity dropped Sunday by five percent, and further cuts in energy prices are in store if the price of crude oil continues to stay around the current $61 a barrel level.
