Two men identified as neo-Nazi skinheads allegedly planned to carry out a massacre of African-Americans, which they intended to conclude with a dramatic assassination of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. The pair apparently fully expected to be killed by security personnel during the attempt on Obama's life.
White supremacists... plotted to murder 88 people and behead 14.
The entire plot was generated over the course of only one month, according to an affidavit filed by a Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent who questioned the two men, Daniel Cowart and Paul Schlesselman. The conspirators, White supremacists from Tennessee and Arkansas who "met via the Internet through a mutual friend," plotted to murder 88 people and behead 14 African-Americans. Among their targets was a predominantly African-American high school.
The number 88 is significant among neo-Nazis as a numeric code for the slogan "Heil Hitler", while 14 can refer to a fourteen-word creed often called "the Fourteen Words" among White supremacists ("We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children.")
Cowart, 18, and Schlesselman, 20, planned to cap their murder rampage with an attack on Obama. They planned to dress in white tuxedos, complete with top hats, and open fire at the presidential candidate from a speeding car as it plowed into his entourage. Both men admitted that they were likely to die in the attack, but they were willing to do so.
To fund their massacre, the pair planned acts of armed robbery, while they also intended to steal weapons and ammunition from a local gun dealer. A female accomplice, Danni Stafford, allegedly drove them to a home they initially targeted for a break-in.
Cowart and Schlesselman were arrested last week in Crockett County, Tennessee, and arraigned Monday in Jackson.
