A group of some 200 Jewish activists entered a Jewish-owned property in an Arab neighborhood in northeastern Jerusalem this week in order to reclaim it from Arabs who had begun to build an illegal structure on the site.

The activity was permitted by police, who came and secured the participants following a court order that determined that the owner of the land has the right to allow Jews to enter his property and plant trees.

 

Recently saplings had been uprooted there by Border Guard police officers.

 

The Jewish activists planted approximately 500 olive trees on the property, led by Aryeh King, who was given permission to enter and take control of the property by the owner, Eliyahu Cohen of Ramat Gan.

 

The five-acre (20-dunam) property, on which there are a number of trailer homes, is located in the Ras Hamis neighborhood in northeastern Jerusalem, between the neighborhoods of French Hill and Anata.

 

The land itself is part of the Eastern Gate compound that the city of Jerusalem has planned as a Jewish residential area and industrial park.
