Livni's aides said she asked Mofaz to stay in politics and join her government, and even promised him a senior position if he were to return. “We see Mofaz as an important part of Kadima's leadership and we very much hope that he will decide to return and serve in a senior position,” they added. Aides suggested that Mofaz would be offered the Finance Ministry, although analysts say Mofaz is more likely to be interested in the Foreign Ministry.
Sources in Mofaz's office confirmed that the conversation had taken place, but denied that Mofaz and Livni had discussed politics or the subject of political appointments in the next government.
Following the Kadima primaries, Mofaz announced that he was leaving politics. However, he has since shown signs that he plans to remain active in Kadima, and sources close to him say he is considering joining Livni's government. Mofaz will officially return to politics on October 2 after a short break, at which point he will announce whether or not he has chosen to remain a Kadima minister.
