Mofaz Backers Want Probe on Livni's Victory

Knesset Member Zev Elkin, a supporter of Transportation and Road Safety Minister Shaul Mofaz, asked Attorney General Menachem Mazuz Sunday night to conduct an investigation into Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's victory in the Kadima primary election last week. The appeal was prepared in his name by Tzion Amir, who also is the attorney for former President Moshe Katzav.

MK Elkin accused Livni of not acting like "Mrs. Clean" by not ordering an internal probe. She has won wide popularity by her image of being void of corruption.

The appeal challenges the results in 80 of the 114 Kadima polling stations, including the one in Rahat where all 430 votes were nullified. Livni won the Kadima election by 431 votes, a one percent margin over Mofaz.

Other problems in the elections stemmed from the media's reporting exit poll results 15 minutes before the polls were closed. Voting was extended by 30 minutes beyond the anticipated time following appeals from several Kadima activists and from the Livni camp that people were waiting in line at the original closing time.

The Mofaz camp argued that the early reporting of the exit polls, which prematurely showed that Livni would win by a landslide, caused many voters to turn around and go home.
