Veteran British broadcaster Walter Bingham, now a show host on Israel National Radio, takes listeners on an in-depth tour of England's Jewish community in this week's edition of Walter's World. Below is a glimpse of his journey:

Well, as you may already know, I had occasion to spend a week in London. It was the wedding of my grandson

The number of Brits who make aliyah far exceeds that from the US and Canada in proportion to their total population.

that took me there, and what a joyous occasion it was. For the first time in my life I now also have a granddaughter and hopefully soon Jewish great-grandchildren.   Of course I never travel alone, but with my constant companion. It’s a great asset to be a good listener and my companion certainly just listens and never answers back. It’s the microphone of Walter’s World.

So when all the excitement was over, I was curious about who’s who and what’s what in the Jewish London that I left behind more than four years ago when I made Aliyah. During that period I found out, that what I like to know and investigate, usually also interests the listeners to my program. Or perhaps it is the other way around, that only those people who like what I do tune in to Walter’s World.  Whichever way, I thought that it would be interesting to talk to some of the people who shape Jewish life in the United Kingdom in general - and London in particular.

So in this week's program and well as next week's, (Sept. 7 & 14), I bring you an insight into at least some aspects of who and what makes the UK’s Jewish community tick. Among the interviews, you will hear from a leader of the principle administrative body, the Community Security Organization which is unfortunately a necessity these days. I talk with Mayor John Marshall of the borough that includes the famous Golders Green. I have an interview about the Jewish men and women serving in the armed forces in Iraq and Pakistan. I talk to Jonathan Miller, the headmaster of the UK’s largest Jewish school. There is also an in depth interview with Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi of Britain and the Commonwealth.

Please don’t get me wrong. I love all Jews, but sometimes I get the impression that the North Americans believe they carry an unfair burden and that they are called upon to contribute a disproportionate amount of effort toward the maintenance of Jewish life and the security of Israel. I hope that these two programs will help to dispel that view and show, that the relatively small Jewish community of the UK also does what can be expected from their numbers, if not more. Certainly, the number of Brits who make aliyah far exceeds that from the US and Canada in proportion to their total population.

So I look forward to having you aboard when we broadcast live on Sundays at 5pm in Israel, 10am NY time, 2pm UTC/GMT or whenever you find time to click on Walter’s World at www.israelnationalradio.com, where you can hear the program on demand an a podcast.
