Palestinian terrorists have fired two more Kassams, even as the IAF attacked a vehicle filled with the rockets.
Terrorists of the Palestinian Authority fired a Kassam rocket late last night (Monday) towards a Jewish town in the Shaar HaNegev region, and another one this morning towards Sderot. No one was hurt and no damage was caused.
Amidst the continuing attacks, the Israel Air Force attacked a vehicle in northern Gaza Monday evening carrying a Kassam-firing cell and many Kassam rockets. Conflicting reports abound as to whether the terrorists were hurt or escaped; the car was directly hit.
Former Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz said today that a ground offensive in Gaza is currently not the best option, and supports "targeted attacks" instead. "We have to put them on the run," Mofaz told Army Radio today. "They must feel attacked. No one who is involved in organizing or taking part in rocket attacks can be immune. This is the method that has proven itself in the past."
A plan drawn up by IDF Southern Command Chief Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant also does not feature a ground-forces offensive in Gaza. Instead, it includes targeted attacks, a buffer zone on the PA side of the Gaza-Israel fence in which the IDF will operate, and improved tunnel-detection technology and intelligence capabilities.
Chief of Staff Supports Offensive
Just over a week ago, however, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi told the Cabinet that the only way to stop Kassam rockets from Gaza is via an IDF ground operation. "Our helicopters and artillery fire can reduce the Kassam rocket firings," Ashkenazi said, "but cannot prevent them completely."
On the PA side, efforts continue to be made to unite all the various military factions into one national PA army. Gaza Security Chief Gen. Bahri Jamal Kaid told PA Television this week that some 75% of the factions have been integrated. However, representatives of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Resistance Committees say they will work to thwart the plan.
IDF Arrests PA Terrorists
In Judea and Samaria, IDF forces arrested 28 suspected Palestinian Authority terrorists on Monday night. A Molotov cocktail was thrown at Israeli forces during the course of the operation, causing no injuries or damage.
