Thousands marched Wednesday in solidarity with the residents of rocket-battered western Negev town of Sderot.

The two-part protest, beginning with a late-morning march, was organized by two organizations - “A New Spirit” (Ruach Hadasha) and “The Council for Sderot’s Security.”  Israelis from all over the country converged on the town, located close to the Gaza border, for the day-long event.

An open discussion on the issue of terrorism emanating from Gaza began at 1:00 p.m. Speakers included Brig.-Gen. (ret.) MK Effie Eitam (NU/NRP), MK Rabbi Yitzchak Levi (NU/NRP), and Maj.-Gen. (ret.) Uzi Dayan. The day’s events also include a family hike and a free concert featuring singer Aharon Razel.

Security forces were on hand to guarantee the safety of the marchers and participants at the other events.

The town has been besieged almost daily for more than two years by Kassam rocket attacks, and has been periodically attacked since the outbreak of the Oslo War in 2000. The missiles have increased dramatically in both frequency and range since the 2005 Disengagement from adjacent Gaza, when the Israeli government demolished 21 Jewish towns in Gush Katif in a unilateral withdrawal.
