On Tu B’Shvat, the Jewish people celebrate the New Year for trees.
During this holiday, we remind ourselves of the importance of trees in our lives.
They offer us shade when we are tired and weary.
They produce nourishing and sweet fruits to eat.
Trees purify the air we breathe and are the green lungs for our cities.
Trees help prevent our precious soils from erosion and our land from becoming a desert.
Lastly, they are beautiful and inspiring to gaze upon. As the old adage goes, “I have never seen something as beautiful as a tree.”
In the Book of Deuteronomy (Devarim), Chapter 8, verses 6-8, the Torah states, "You shall observe the commandments of Hashem, your God, to go in his ways and fear him. For Hashem your God is bringing you to a good land: a land with streams of water, of springs and underground water coming forth in valley and mountain; a land of wheat, barley, grape, fig, and pomegranate; a land of olive oil and (date) honey.”
These are the seven fruits for which the Land of Israel is praised. Here are some pictures that attempt to capture some of the vegetation and springs mentioned in these verses, as well as some of the beautiful trees and nature that are abundant in the Holy Land. The budding of the almond blossoms also signifies the coming of Spring in Israel.
Happy Tu B'Shvat 5767!
