Fatah spokesman Abd el-Hakim Awad charges that Hamas squads have dug a network of underground tunnels with the purpose of traversing them to kill the Fatah leadership.
Awad says some of the tunnels run under Salah a-Din Street in the village of Jebalya, north of Gaza City, all the way to the homes of senior Fatah men and to a PA National Security forces' compound. The network of tunnels, he says, also serves as storage for weapons and explosives.
Fatah sources say the tunnels were discovered by chance, and that five tunnels have been uncovered in the northern and central parts of Gaza.
Awad accuses the Hamas of being deceitful: "On the one hand they say nice words about continuing dialog towards a PA unity government, and on the other hand they are plotting a new conflagration."
Tunnels have been a weapon of choice for Arabs in Gaza in their war against Israel. They have proven hard to detect and have served terrorists in many successful attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians. Terrorists tunneled under an IDF position in July 2006 and managed to surprise Israeli forces, killing two soldiers and taking a third, Cpl. Gilad Shalit, captive.
