Though widely-circulated emailed messages spoke of brain surgery in Europe or Canada, and urgent text messages asked for the recitation of prayers, Rabbi Elon underwent a back operation on Tuesday in Tel Aviv's Asuta Hospital.

Dr. Eli Ashkenazy, a neurosurgeon at Asuta Hospital, said that the rabbi had a ruptured disc in his neck. "He is walking around," the doctor said, "but he must remain for supervision for 2-3 days."

Rabbi Elon is counted among the leading rabbis of the religious-Zionist camp. He heads Yeshivat HaKotel in the Old City, as well as the educational organization Mibereshit [From the Beginning]. He is the son of former Supreme Court Deputy Chief Justice Menachem Elon, and a brother of MK Rabbi Benny Elon (National Union).

Of his many lectures and Torah classes, the "jewel in the crown" is considered to be his weekly dissertation on the weekly Torah portion, delivered twice weekly in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Hundreds of people attend, while thousands more listen by radio. Yet another weekly Torah class by Rabbi Elon is televised to the nation at large every Friday.
