It was the first sign of life made public by the terrorists who abducted Shalit. However, PRC spokesman Abu Mujahid also said Shalit would be held by his captors for as long as it takes to force Israel to meet their demands.

“Gilad Shalit is in good health and is being treated according to Islamic standards of dealing with prisoners of war,” he said. “We are ready to keep him for years so long as our demands are not met.”

Abu Mujahid’s group is demanding that the Jewish State release 1,000 PA terrorists incarcerated in Israeli jails in exchange for the IDF officer.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert rejected an offer last week by Hamas terrorists to trade a video of Shalit for the release of 450 PA terrorists and administrative prisoners, saying that Israel “wants Shalit and not a video of him.”

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak promised last week, at a meeting with the Prime Minister in the Sinai resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, to continue his efforts to secure Shalit’s release.

Egyptian officials, who have been negotiating with the kidnappers for months, blamed PA indecision for the lack of progress in concluding a deal. "What is being offered is an exchange deal, but unfortunately there are some Palestinian powers who think that the situation is not yet ready for this exchange," said Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
