A rocket landed just south of the city of Ashkelon and another struck Sderot in the early afternoon, sending one person into shock. Other rockets fell in unpopulated areas near the Sufa checkpoint and next to one of the Sha'ar Hanegev kibbutzim (agricultural collectives). No damage or injuries were reported in the latter attacks.

One of the rockets fired at Sderot landed near the city's central Chabad House, where a large group of children was enjoying a day of entertainment organized for them by the Center for Saving the Land and People of Israel. The rocket struck when a delegation of rabbis from the sponsoring organization and other VIPs arrived at the Chabad center. In the wake of the PA attack, many children left the event, although hundreds remained to continue playing. No one was physically injured.

The Chabad House director, Rabbi Moshe Pizem, called the afternoon incident "a great miracle" and added, "The rockets won't deter us and we will continue encouraging and assisting the residents of the city."

The Islamic Jihad organization claimed that its operatives fired the rocket barrage in response to Israeli strikes that killed several of its members today. The organization threatened further acts of "retaliation," as well: "We will increase the terror in the hearts of the Jews and among their cowardly soldiers."

A combined security forces' operation near the city of Jenin this morning led to the elimination of two senior wanted Islamic Jihad terrorists. The operation, a joint effort by the IDF, an elite police unit and the Israeli secret service (Shabak), was intended to end with the arrest of the wanted men. However, the Islamic Jihad members were killed in an exchange of gunfire with IDF troops. There were no injuries to Israeli forces.

At the start of the operation, according to IDF sources, two trained dogs from the IDF's canine unit were deployed at the terrorists' assumed location. The jihadists opened fire and killed the dogs.

The two men struck down in the counter-terrorist operation this morning were involved in attempts to carry out bombings aimed at Jewish targets. One of them operated an explosives factory in his hometown of Tubas, in Samaria. The other Islamic Jihad terrorist killed this morning was involved in several attempts to carry out bombings against Israeli targets and was known to have directly recruited at least one known suicide bomber

The identification of the two terrorists came about thanks to information gleaned when a planned enemy attack was foiled by security services about one month ago.

The Islamic Jihad in the PA is funded and directed by a command hierarchy located in Damascus, Syria.
