Americans believe, by a large margin, that U.S. pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians would encourage more terrorism. A nationwide survey conducted by the New American Initiative and The Chicago Sun Times earlier this month finds that 62% feel that forcing Israel to give up territory - including dividing Jerusalem - for a Palestinian state would encourage terrorism. Less than 10% thought that pressuring Israel would end terrorism, and the rest expressed no opinion. Some 63% of the respondents said that last month\'s attacks in New York and Washington would have happened even if the U.S. did not support Israel.
