A network of women is involved in key positions in the Paestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) organization. They work in areas such as logistics, financial support systems and courier services, according to a report by the Intelligence and Information Center at the Center for Special Studies (C.S.S.).
In August and September 2006, Israeli Security Agency and IDF forces arrested a group of female PIJ members in Judea and Samaria, some of whom were directly involved in transferring money from PIJ headquarters in Damascus to terror cells in Judea, Samaria (specifically Ramallah) and Jerusalem.
One female accomplice, 34-year-old Wadha Ghawanmeh, was detained on charges of handling funds from the PIJ’s Syrian headquarters and transferring them to terror operatives using other Palestinian Authority women as couriers. Ghawanmeh’s husband, a senior operative in the PIJ, is currently being held in an Israeli prison.
Two other women, Hibah Hamidat and Filastin Sabah were also detained and confessed to their role as couriers for the terrorist organization. All three women are residents of Jalazoun, north of Ramallah. A number of other women who served as intermediaries for funds sent from the PIJ headquarters in Syria were also detained.
