Knesset members from the National Union-National Religious Party faction have been invited by Jewish residents of Jaffa, adjacent to Tel Aviv, to visit the city on Sunday to see the extent of the harassment and attacks on them by their Arab neighbors. Among the phenomena reported by the concerned citizens are physical and verbal violence, repeated property damage, harassment of Jewish women and girls, anti-Jewish slogans and Nazi swastikas featuring in graffiti, as well as extensive illegal construction in the Arab sector. The MKs have been asked to assist in combating the anti-Jewish trend.
During a similar tour taken by the NU-NRP MKs in Acco (Acre), the extent of the Arab intimidation and takeover in mixed Jewish-Arab cities was discovered to be much greater than originally thought. In cities such as Haifa, Carmiel, Nahariya, Lod, Ramleh and Be’er Sheva, a pattern of Arab population shifts has emerged over time. At first, several Arabs purchase homes in a Jewish neighborhood, and use physical and verbal violence to cause a Jewish exodus from the area. Those neighborhoods emptied of Jews then become centers of crime, drugs and prostitution.
Representatives of the NU-NRP faction expressed their view that the extent and systematic nature of the Arab takeovers of Jewish towns indicate something beyond simple criminal turf wars or "neighborhood feuds." The MKs suggested that the motivations of the Arabs in the confrontations are irredentist and anti-Jewish, stemming from a desire to take over the state of Israel entirely on behalf of the Arab world.
In a related event, Sheikh Raed Salah, head of the Islamic Movement in Israel, called for the “Israeli occupier” to “disappear.”
Addressing thousands of Israeli Arabs at a rally in Nazareth on Friday, Salah said, “History has proven to us, for hundreds of years, that the occupier is destroyed and we remain on our land. And you, oh Israeli occupier - disappear! And we will remain in our country, with Allah’s help.”
Referring to the new government minister from the Yisrael Beiteinu party, Avigdor Lieberman, Salah continued, “Our land has already seen a lot of Liebermans, and they have gone and are no longer, and we step on them. And you are just like them, Lieberman. The land will swallow you and our children will walk upon it.”
The Yisrael Beiteinu platform calls for an exchange of populations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority or independent entity. Under the plan, Israeli Arabs would be transferred into the PA, just as Jews would be, and have been, transferred out of areas turned over to PA control.
