The decision came after Health Minister Yaakov Ben Yizri (Pensioners party) met with the officials of the French manufacturer of the vaccine, Sanofi-Aventis, to discuss the issue.
Four men died within a week after receiving the inoculation, giving rise to speculation that the vaccine itself may have contributed to their demise. Further investigation showed, however, the deaths were simply a sad coincidence.
Ben-Yizri said that no direct link between the vaccine and the deaths of the four men had been found and that all four had suffered from chronic illnesses.
The Health Minister added that “all the experts, doctors and pathologists have ruled out any possibility of a connection between the incidents…. This was the unequivocal opinion of each and every expert following thorough clarifications of the matter."
The French company sent a four-member team of medical experts to investigate the incidents. A company spokesperson said a number of safety inspections had been carried out on the vaccine, both in France and in Israel.
Some 140,000 people were vaccinated in the past week against the flu without incident. The health minister set an example by being immunized at the end of the news conference announcing the resumption of the inoculations.
