The 86-year-old spiritual leader of the Sephardic religious Shas party was taken to the intensive care unit to recover. He will remain under observation there for several days, doctors said.

Rabbi Yosef’s 11 children were at the hospital to be by his side and spent the morning praying for his recovery. Aides to Rabbi Yosef said that the surgery went well, and that “any other fear regarding his health has faded.”

A number of dignitaries came to the hospital to visit the rabbi and wish him a speedy recovery, including Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik, Health Minister Yaakov Ben Yizri, Communications Minister Ariel Atias and Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Eliyahu Yishai, who is also the Chairman of Shas.

The procedure was carried out by a team of top doctors, including Dr. Chaim Lotan, who flew in from Switzerland to carry out the catheterization and stint implants, together with Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef, Hadassah’s general director. Two other doctors, Dr. Dan Gilon and Dr. Boris Varshitsky, assisted in the procedure.

The night before the surgery, thousands of worshippers gathered at the Western Wall to pray for his recovery, led by current Sephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar and other religious leaders.

The rabbi’s personal physician, Professor Yochanan Shatsman, was visibly relieved when the procedure ended and said, “Thank G-d our prayers have been answered.”
