In light of the IDF withdrawal during the night from the Givat Shalhevet (Abu Sneineh) and Harat a-Sheikh neighborhoods in Hevron, the National Union-Yisrael Beitenu party has decided to resign from the national unity government. The move comes seven months after the formation of the government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Minister of Infrastructures Avigdor Lieberman of the Yisrael Beiteinu faction will resign his post, as will his colleague Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi of the National Union. Sharon has no immediate cause for concern, as his government still commands over 70 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, but the long-range future is more uncertain.
The Yesha Council, the Jewish Community of Hevron, and Women in Green congratulated the party for its decision, noting also Sharon\'s recent expressed support for a Palestinian state. Yesha Council leaders will meet this evening with the Prime Minister; the meeting was to have been held later in the week, but was moved up, at Sharon\'s request.
