Tamir told the Knesset Education Committee that the public school system would take priority over non-governmental education associations, most of which are hareidi Orthodox schools.

United Torah Judaism (UTJ) Knesset Member Rabbi Moshe Gafni responded angrily to the decision, accusing Tamir of declaring “war against the hareidi Orthodox education system.”

Even "former education ministers [Shulamit] Aloni and [Yossi] Sarid [of the far-left Meretz party] didn’t do this,” noted Gafni. He asked committee members to recess the meeting until he was able to confer with Shas Party members. Shas, the Sephardic hareidi-religious party, is a member of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s Kadima party coalition.

The committee's vote has been postponed to Wednesday at the prime minister`s request.

Coalition talks earlier this year between UTJ and Kadima ended in a stalemate, leaving UTJ outside the fold. In an effort to entice the party into the coalition, however, Olmert has left the Welfare portfolio open.
