The ministerial committee for official ceremonies has decided to declare tomorrow a national day of memorial for the some 50 Israeli victims of Siberia Airlines flight 1812. The memorial day will be held one week after the plane was downed into the Black Sea, apparently by a wayward missile fired during a Ukrainian military exercise. All flags flown from government buildings will be lowered to half-mast, a special Knesset memorial session will be held, and state-run Israel Radio will be requested to play appropriate music during the day.
Family members returned last night from the crash site, where they attempted to identify their loved ones and held a memorial ceremony. Fourteen out of the fifteen bodies recovered from the sea have been identified. It now appears certain that the plane was felled by an explosion that did not originate inside the plane.
