Some 16 rockets hit Israel’s third largest city, injuring 12 people, including one seriously wounded victim, two moderately and the remainder lightly wounded. Another 17 people suffered from shock. One man suffered a heart attack and died shortly after the barrage of rockets hit the area. The victims were taken to the city’s Rambam Hospital.

One of the rockets landed just meters from a bridge, damaging a building and several cars. Another rocket scored a direct hit on the ground floor of an 8-story apartment building. Three people in the building were lightly wounded including one man who was in the underground storage level.

An empty Egged bus that was just pulling up to the last stop on the line was damaged by shrapnel from a rocket which landed close by. All the windows in the bus were shattered, with at least 30 holes in the front window. The bus was empty except for the driver, who was moderately injured.

Another missile hit a restaurant, causing damage but no casualties.

Four air raid sirens sounded in Haifa just prior to the attack. Officials said the fact that most of the residents were in bomb shelters and protected rooms contributed to the relatively low number of casualties.

Israel Railways said that trains to Haifa will be stopped at Atlit. Special shuttle buses will convey riders to the port city from there.
