A traffic policeman and a Civil Guard volunteer found themselves this past Friday in the midst of an experience they had not planned for. Outside the town of El\'ad, near Rosh Ha\'Ayin, they went to check out a car that had suddenly stopped on the side of the road. They found a driver, excited but in control, who told them that his wife, in the back seat of the car, was about to give birth. They did the only thing they could: they turned on their sirens and led the family-in-formation\'s car speeding behind them to the hospital. However, they didn\'t make it: At Bareket Junction, the husband stopped again and informed them that the birth had started. The two admitted that they were stumped, but fortunately the scene was suddenly graced with the presence of Police Superintendent Chaim Blumenfeld, who later said that he did not have the luxury of asking himself whether he knew what to do or not. \"The head was already out,\" he said, \"and I just helped the birth along. It was a baby boy, and I cleared the liquids from his mouth, gave him a little slap on his behind, and he started to cry.\" He said that he was not sure what to do about the umbilical cord, so he just left it until the Magen David Adom personnel arrived on the scene. The thankful mother said that she hoped Blumenfeld would attend the brit (ritual circumcision) this coming Friday, and he said he would be happy to do so.
