The Palestinian Authority residents who were killed, members of a single family, died in an explosion on the beach on June 9. An IDF probe into the incident concluded that Israeli artillery fire did not cause the deaths, which it said probably were due to Arab fire, a mine laid by the Hamas, or old unexploded ordnance.

However, MK Gal-On said that Israel has a "moral responsibility" and that its credibility would be upheld if there were an international probe. She also noted human rights groups allegations that the IDF altered evidence to shirk responsibility for the deaths.

Likud Knesset Member Gilad Erdan charged Gal-On with stabbing the military establishment in the back. "MK Gal-On, together with the extreme left, continues to stick knives in the back... and to take the side of enemies of the state," the MK added. "It is interesting that she never has demanded an investigation into the Kassam rocket attacks on S'derot and Ashkelon."

Military spokespersons denied the charge that the IDF is concealing facts that would point to its involvement in the deaths - a claim also made in the London Times on Saturday. The Times report further claimed that the IDF admitted to covering up naval artillery strikes on Gaza in its investigation of the events on the beach.

Regarding the London Times article, the IDF Spokesperson's Office released a statement saying, "The newspaper chose to use main ideas and partial information, and to present it as the full report." The IDF said quotations attributed by the newspaper to military spokesman Captain Jacob Dalal were inaccurate and taken out of context.

The Saturday edition of the UK newspaper the Guardian also claims that its own investigation "raises new and so far unanswered questions about the Israeli military probe that cleared the army of responsibility."

Captain Dalal is quoted by the Guardian as saying, "We're not trying to cover up anything. We didn't do the investigation to exonerate ourselves. If it was our fire, we'll say it."
