It was announced last night that the General Security Service has apprehended over 20 members of a terrorist cell that was enlisted, trained, and activated by the Syrian arm of Hamas. Some of those arrested were involved in the suicide murders in Netanya in March and May of this year; eight Israelis were killed and over 100 were hurt in these attacks.
This was the largest organization uncovered during the course of the past year, and more arrests are anticipated. The terrorists were said to have a high level of training and ability, and were active throughout Shomron and elsewhere. Most are students who were enlisted during their studies in Syria, Yemen, Sudan, and other Arab countries. They were trained in how to detonate various types of explosives, how to commit attacks, how to kidnap soldiers, and more. A senior Israeli security source said that this is further proof of the depth of the involvement of Syria and other Arab countries in terrorism.
