The Israeli Defense Forces Chief of General Staff, is planning to change that. Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz has ordered the C41 Communications Directorate to rectify that situation, and the agency is undertaking a project to finally coordinate the three branches of defense.

Boeing has developed a program designed to link the military branches and their soldiers to weapons, sensors and information systems with a mobile network that allows field commanders to control planes, ships and troops simultaneously.

The program which is called the Future Combat System (FCS) is an initiative of the United States Army, and would unite all of the military branches in combat situations.

However, the various military branches in the IDF prefer not to share information about their operational systems with each other. At present, all three IDF branches operate on independent communications systems – and they want to keep it that way.

An IDF officer said earlier this week that turf wars and ego problems have, in fact, held up the project. “There is such a problem,” he said, “but we are trying to get past the obstacles to unify the systems and allow maximum operational capabilities”.

The C41 Directorate is working to persuade the various IDF branches that implementing the FCS system will give them an edge over the enemy, and not each other.
