The Wireless Mesh network will provide a much larger range and area of wireless internet coverage than Wi-Fi, the wireless technology used to provide wireless "hot spots" in cities around the globe, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

In Ariel, the new Wireless Mesh will be used by the municipality to read water meters remotely, streamline communication between city workers, bolster law enforcement capabilities with extended video surveillance, extend the University of Judea and Samaria's network in the town, and provide all residents with wireless Internet.

"This test is another step in the wireless communications revolution," Nortel Israel's President Sorine Lupu said, "through the first demonstration in Israel of wireless coverage in open urban areas, as well as advanced wireless services aimed at improving the public's quality of life."

The network will be running in less than a month and the test will last a year.
