"The attack in Kedumim," a Council statement issued Friday reads, "makes it painfully clear that Olmert must establish a government whose main goal is to fight the fierce terrorism, and not to collapse and retreat."
Council head Bentzy Lieberman (pictured) said today, "The government must do nothing other than to look terrorism in the eye and defeat it. That is its job."
The Yesha Rabbis Council also released an announcement:
"Following the murder of four holy Jews - the 'sacrifices of weakness and [Olmert's withdrawal plan called] 'turning inward' - we call for a total end to entertaining the illusion of peace, turning-inward and disengagement. Israel's enemies must be dealt with in the appropriate way according to the Torah of Israel. At this time of trouble, we must unite our forces around our genuine problems."
MK Uri Ariel (NU/NRP) said, "In light of the murder of citizens and the firing of Katyushas and Kassams in the south, Israel's citizens expect the government to concentrate on bringing security and not on expelling Jews.
Meanwhile, Hamas Authority officials continue to make their position clear. "Our battle is only against the Zionist occupation," Khaled Mash'al told Al-Jazeera in Damascus. New PA foreign minister Mahmoud Zahar said that the US is "guilty of crimes against the Muslim and Arab world and is widening the rift between the American people and those of the Middle East."
In May 2003, Zahar told BBC, "I'm telling you frankly, the attitude of Islam is not to accept a foreign state in this area." Interviewer Tim Sebastian then said, "So until Israel ceases to exist, you won't lay down your arms. Is that right?" and Zahar answered, "First of all, we are a part of the independent Islamist - this is the attitude of thousands and millions of people... Islam is a supreme power in this area, sooner or later we are going to achieve our power, our moral principles, our virtue, in order to implement a real state."
Zahar said this week that Hamas has no plans to negotiate with Israel. He attacked both the U.S. and Canada for cutting off aid to the Hamas Authority.
