Although the counting of the final votes - mainly of the military - generally sways the final election results to the right, that is not what happened this time. Only one right-wing party, the Likud, gained a seat as a result of the final count, while two pro-withdrawal parties, Kadima and Meretz, gained one each.
This makes it theoretically possible for Ehud Olmert to form a government that would support further unilateral withdrawals without the help of either Arab parties or right-wing leaning ones. Kadima (29 MKs), Labor (20), the Pensioners (7) and Meretz (5) could form a coalition government of 61 MKs.
Given the unstable history of small-majority coalitions, however, it is not likely that Olmert would want to rely on such a narrow government.
Another result of the change in the distribution of Knesset seats is that the Likud is no longer the 5th-largest party, but is rather tied for 3rd with Shas. Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu might therefore be able to become the Opposition Leader even without joining up with another party. However, he would have to be voted in by a majority of the opposition MKs.
The final make-up of the 17th Knesset as it is expected to be sworn in on April 17:
