(IsraelNN.com) The OU Orthodox Union has removed its kosher certification from El Al Israel Airlines, the daily Hamodia reports. According to the report, efforts to iron out difficulties during recent months have failed, resulting in the major kosher certifying organization’s decision to pull the airline’s certification.
Officials stress that food served on the NYC to Tel Aviv flights still comes from an OU certified caterer, but there no longer is rabbinical supervision on the airline which includes food preparation, handling, and storage.
The Hamodia report documents cases in which non-kosher food was purchased and served on flights, as well as the airline failing to comply with the double wrapping requirements. Airline officials are quoted as saying that the double wrapping results in significantly more trash on flights and meals are too difficult for passengers to open.
The report also states the airline’s rabbinical supervisor made a recent trip to NYC in an effort to avoid the revocation of the kosher certification, but without success, adding that on the flight, the rabbi himself did not rely on the “standard” airline meal and he ordered the special kosher “Mehadrin” meal.
