Ninth-grade students from ORT Ma’alot Yeshiva High School held a cluster munition they found during an annual school trip in the Upper Galilee for more than an hour, unaware of the danger. The munition exploded in the Mitzpe Pe'er area, killing student Yair Wilensky and injuring 23 other teenagers.
The students said that during the hike they found several pieces of military ordnance, including two missiles, and even collected some of them. According to them, they had not received a briefing or instructions on what to do if they encountered unexploded ordnance.
They also said they did not notice a sign warning of unexploded ordnance and prohibiting entry to the area.
