    Italy proposes UNIFIL alternative

Lebanese media reported that Italy has proposed to establish a smaller multinational force, with UN approval, to replace UNIFIL in southern Lebanon. According to the outline, the force will focus on supporting the Lebanese army, protecting the civilian population, assisting the US-led ceasefire mechanism, and future disarmament arrangements, as well as monitoring violations and reducing escalation between Israel and Lebanon.

According to the report in Nidaa al-Watan, the success of the plan depends on resolving a number of issues that have not yet been resolved, including the command structure, the scope of the forces, the rules of engagement, the funding, the verification powers in the pilot areas, and the possibility of reactivating the ceasefire mechanism that has been suspended since March.
