Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has expressed opposition to an amendment to the conscription law intended to regulate the status of haredi yeshiva students.

“The law addresses the needs of the yeshivot rather than urgent security needs and the reduction of the burden on the serving public. Its provisions create a negative incentive for enlistment and entrench inequality over the long term. Aligning the law with constitutional standards requires big and comprehensive changes, including the establishment of personal, effective, and immediate sanctions to enforce the duty of conscription in an equitable manner,” Baharav-Miara wrote.
