MK Moshe Saada of the Likud submitted a bill that would raise the maximum age of running for the position of Chief Rabbi of Israel, in a way that would allow Rabbi Yaakov Shapira to run for the position even though he is over seventy.
The law will include a section stating that a rabbi who has passed the age of 70 will only be able to run if it is his first time, in order to prevent Rabbi Shlomo Amar from running for office - a move feared by the Shas party.
