Economy Minister Nir Barkat has welcomed the opening of several new branches of Carrefour in Israel; 50 new branches will be opening.

"Bringing Carrefour to Israel is an important and historic step that will lead to increased competition and lower prices for Israeli citizens," Barkat said. "I am delighted that we have succeeded in helping Carrefour and other foreign chains to enter the market here, with exceptional speed, and thus we hope to enable Israelis to purchase essential goods at lower prices than are currently possible.

"Our goal is to introduce competition and I believe that soon, we will see new market-players entering the Israeli market," Barkat added, "bringing prices down. Only genuine competition will bring about lower prices for our consumers."
