The former heads of various security services addressed President Herzog in a letter: "Any outline that comes out of these discussions that does not have a clear foundation of liberal Jewish democracy in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence will not be acceptable to us and apparently to the majority of the public. We will oppose this in every legal and democratic way possible.''
The former officials also asked: "We call on you, Honorable President, to announce in a way that is not ambiguous, that you will not give your hand and your patronage as the president of the country to harm democracy and the judicial system."
Among the signatories were former ISA chiefs Nadav Argaman, Yuval Diskin, Carmi Gilon, and Yaakov Peri, as well as former Chiefs of Staff Ehud Barak, Moshe Ya'alon and Dan Halutz, former Mossad head Tamir Pardo and other senior officials.
