MK Moshe Saada's (Likud) amendment to the law governing the Department of Police Investigations was passed in a preliminary reading in the Knesset plenum.
Saada proposed to separate the Department from the prosecutor's office and make it an independent investigative body under the Ministry of Justice. This is in order to prevent difficulties encountered when the prosecution has to investigate police officers given the close teamwork in which they are engaged when the suspect is not a member of the police force.
