Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned remarks by Foreign Minister Eli Cohen who spoke out against the independence of the Bank of Israel.

"The Bank of Israel law was passed under my leadership and it guarantees the independence of the monetary committee headed by the governor in setting the interest rate. Nothing will change that," Netanyahu tweeted.

Minister Eli Cohen caused an uproar yesterday after tweeting that the interest rate increase is unjustified and "constitutes a continuation of the abuse of the mortgage holders". Cohen wrote that he asked the Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, to work to formulate an outline with the Governor of the Bank of Israel to stop interest rate increases.
