Yoav Galant: School year to start on September 1, despite coronavirus

Education Min. Yoav Galant promises school year will start on time, lays out possibilities for preventing infection.

Education Minister Yoav Galant (Likud) on Wednesday morning held a special meeting with senior Education Ministry officials, to discuss how schools will operate during the coming school year.

During the meeting, Galant approved the main points noted in an interim report. He also instructed district managers and department directors to prepare to hold classes despite the coronavirus outbreak and the high infection rate.

Three main plans were approved, in accordance with possible infection rates. Implementation of these plans may vary by locality, in accordance with the local infection rates. The plans will be executed in coordination with local authorities, the teachers' unions, and the various government offices.

Plan A

1. In middle and high schools, regular learning will be integrated with digital distance learning.
2. Elementary schools and preschools will operate within the existing infrastructure, with improved protection measures.

* The Education Ministry will work to provide and install digital infrastructure, devices, and improved protection measures, with the resources which will be allocated to this issue.

Plan B

1. Students in grades 5-12 will study online.
2. Students in grades 1-4 will be divided into small, well-spaced groups within the elementary schools, including in the learning quarters allocated for grades 5-6. Staff will be expanded as necessary.
3. Preschool children will use the existing infrastructure, with improved protection measures.

Plan C

1. Students in grades 5-12 will study online.
2. Students in grades 1-4 will be divided into small, well-spaced groups within the elementary schools, including in the learning quarters allocated for grades 5-6. Staff will be expanded as necessary.
3. Each class in a preschool will be divided into two groups. The Education Ministry and local authorities will prepare the empty classrooms in the middle and high schools for use as additional classrooms for preschoolers. The preschool staff will be expanded as necessary.

Meanwhile, Galant has instructed the district managers to work in cooperation with mayors, regional councils, and local authorities to implement and execute the plans in accordance with the assessments of the coronavirus outbreak.
