Shmuel Abuav, the director-general of Israel’s Education Ministry, has announced plans to resign from his position.
Abuav notified Education Minister Yoav Galant (Likud) on Sunday of his plans to step down as director-general.
The resignation will take effect sometime after the summer vacation, with Abuav indicating he is willing to stay on during the vacation to help prepare the school system for the 2020-2021 school year, which is slated to begin on September 1st.
Abuav has served as director-general since February 2017, when he was tapped by then-Education Minister Naftali Bennett.
Before that, Abuav served as the director-general of the Housing and Construction Ministry, and had a previous stint as director-general at the Education Ministry. Prior to that, he served four terms as mayor of Kiryat Tivon in northern Israel.
