Turkey's coronavirus cases surged to 82,329 on Saturday, after 3,783 new cases were confirmed over 24 hours, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced, according to the Xinhua news agency.

With that, Turkey surpassed Iran in the tally of total cases of COVID-19.

The coronavirus death toll in Turkey, meanwhile, surpassed 1,890 with 121 new deaths.

Koca said that 10,453 patients have recovered from COVID-19 so far, noting that 1,894 cases are being treated at the intensive care units and 1,054 being intubated.

Turkey conducted a total of 40,520 tests for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of tests carried out so far to 598,933, he said.

Turkey reported its first case of coronavirus on March 11.

In an attempt to fight the spread of the virus, Turkey announced a series of measures, including a curfew prohibiting members of the public under the age of 20 from leaving their homes except if absolutely necessary.
