A senior Syrian scientist was killed on Saturday night when his car exploded in the Hamat district, media outlets in Syria reported.

According to the reports, the scientist, Aziz Asbar, who was in charge of the scientific research center in the city of Masyaf, was killed as he left his home. The Syrian government has yet to comment.

The Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC), a Syrian government agency that has the goal of advancing and coordinating scientific activities in the country, is located in Masyaf.

In September of 2017, an advanced missiles factory in the research center was targeted in an air strike, killing two Syrian soldiers and causing severe damage to the facility. The Syrian army claimed that Israel was responsible for the attack, but Israel did not comment on the reports.

In late July, Arab media outlets claimed that Israeli fighter jets hit weapons development centers run by the Assad regime in the Hamat region.

Other reports said that the target was a center for researching chemical weapons. Israel did not comment on those claims.
