Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) that it had foiled an ISIS-linked terror attack planned in the city of Nizhny Novgorod in western Russia for the day of the presidential elections on March 18.

RT quoted the agency as saying that it had foiled "the activities of an ISIS member who had planned a terrorist attack in Nizhny Novgorod."

"According to the intelligence collected, the terrorist - a citizen of a neighboring state - was preparing the attack on the day of [the] Russian presidential election."

Russian law enforcement said that the terrorist opened fire on an FSB team attempting to capture him before being shot dead.

In addition, a high-powered explosive device, weapons, and ammunition, were found at the terrorist's location, RT reported.

Russia has been targeted by several Islamist attacks in the past year. In December, Russian President Vladimir Putin called US President Donald Trump to thank him for a US intelligence tipoff that allowed Russian security forces to thwart an ISIS attack on the Kazansky Cathedral in St. Petersburg.
