US President Donald Trump revealed his national security strategy in a policy speech Monday, pledging to increase defense spending and modernize the US military.

Trump said that his strategy recognizes that the US finds itself "in a new era of competition" in which it is threatened by rogue states and terrorist organizations, as well as "rival powers," such as Russia and China.

He said that the US would seek to enter into "great partnerships" with those rival powers, but that those partnerships must serve US interests.

"We will stand up for ourselves and we will stand up for our country like we have never stood up before."

He pledged to defend America's borders by constructing a wall on the border with Mexico and ending the visa lottery program.

Trump also pledged to defeat "radical Islamic terrorism and ideology, and to prevent it from spreading into the United States."

He said that the US must ensure "peace through strength," and that he would therefore end the "damaging defense sequester" and enlarge the American military while streamlining it.

During his campaign, Trump promised: “As soon as I take office I will ask Congress to fully eliminate the defense sequester and will submit a new budget to rebuild our military. It is so depleted. We will rebuild our military.”
