Police arrested a 60-year-old man from Rishon Letzion this week, after he allegedly set dozens of birds on fire, killing 80 of them.

The suspect is said to have entered an apartment he rents out in Rishon Letzion, where his tenant kept over 100 parrots in cages in the property’s backyard.

Investigators say the suspect set fires inside the bird cages following a dispute with the tenant.

Eighty of the 110 parrots kept on the property were burned to death.

Police detained the landlord for questioning after the incident. The suspect’s arrest was later extended, and an indictment is expected to be filed against him in a district court in Lod Thursday. Authorities say they plan on requesting the suspect be detained until the end of his trial.
