Elor Azariya, the former IDF sergeant convicted of manslaughter for the shooting death of a wounded Arab terrorist in March 2016 was hospitalized Sunday after he passed out while performing clean-up and maintenance work at an army base.

Azariya, who was convicted in January, has been held in custody at the Nahshonim army base since the investigation into the shooting began last year.

Though an IDF court in Tel Aviv sentenced Azariya to 18 months in jail, his sentence was delayed in March, pending an appeal by his legal defense team.

On Sunday, Azariya reportedly lost consciousness while performing routine work at Nahshonim. Azariya was evacuated to a hospital for medical examinations, including ECG tests.

Hospital staff are keeping Azariya under observation due to the concern that he may have fainted because of severe emotional stress – and that he may be at risk of harming himself.

Azariya’s parents, Charlie and Oshra, joined their son in the hospital after they were notified of the incident.
