Israel's UN ambassador Danny Danon was elected Wednesday to the position of deputy president of the 72nd UN General Assembly.

Danon was chosen, after a vote was taken at the UN headquarters in New York, as the representative of the The Western European and Others Group (WEOG) and will begin his role with the initial meeting of the General Assembly in September.

Danon's role will include chairing the meetings of the General Assembly as well as taking an active role in establishing the schedule of the discussions in the General Assembly.

Last year Danon was elected head of the Judicial Committee of the UN, the first time an Israeli representative was chosen to a permanent committee of the UN.

"I am proud to represent Israel in this important role," said Danon, adding "we have proved once again that Israel can become involved in every role in the UN and the obsessive attempts to prevent Israel from maintaining its proper place in the UN will not succeed."
