The life of a spy placed inside Islamic State (ISIS) is at risk after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly disclosed classified information in a meeting with Russian officials last week, ABC News reported on Tuesday night, citing current and former American officials.

The spy was reportedly placed inside the jihadist group by Israel, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The spy provided intelligence involving an active ISIS plot to bring down a passenger jet en route to the United States, with a bomb hidden in a laptop that U.S. officials believe can get through airport screening machines undetected.

The information was reliable enough that the U.S. is considering a ban on laptops on all flights from Europe to the United States, according to ABC News.

The sensitive intelligence was shared with the United States, officials told the network, on the condition that the source remain confidential.

The New York Times claimed earlier on Tuesday that Israel was the source of the intelligence that Trump shared with Russian officials last week.

Israeli officials refused to comment on that report, and Israel's Ambassador to the U.S., Ron Dermer, told the newspaper that the two nations would continue to cooperate closely in the field of counter-terrorism.

Later, two Israeli intelligence officials confirmed to the American news website BuzzFeed that Israel had shared specific intelligence with the United States regarding ISIS plots to smuggle explosive laptops onto planes.

The officials told the website that it appeared that that intelligence had been shared with Russia without prior coordination and that this fact was Israel's "worst fears confirmed", according to one of the officers.

Trump responded to the reports via his Twitter account on Tuesday, saying, "As President I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety."

He noted that the information he shared with the Russian foreign minister is connected to the fight against terrorism and to air security.
