Police arrested a father and son while investigating a fire last night in an apartment in the southern Israeli city of Arad which led to the death of a 40-year old woman and 56-year old man.

The father and son are suspected of causing death by negligence, after a storage room containing weapons was found in the burnt home.

Investigators arrested the ex-husband of the woman who was killed and her son, a soldier in an elite army unit, who were holding explosives at the home and a laboratory for the creation of materials at the father’s house.

Police will request to extend their arrests at the Beer Sheva Magistrate’s Court.

Paramedic Yarden Madar related last night, “When we arrived at the scene we saw a fire inside the home and thick smoke. As firefighters contained the fire, they brought out to the yard a man of about 50 who showed no signs of life, and we were forced to confirm his death at the scene.”

“A short while later, as firefighters continued efforts to extinguish the fire, an additional injured person was located, a woman of about 40 who showed no signs of life. We were also forced to confirm her death at the scene,” she described.
